New Cons With a Little Bit of Curves by Branding Magazine
Beside the little black dress, the second “must have” for years now, are our beloved Cons. For decades the Chuck Taylor All Star basketball shoes only came in black, with a white variant released in 1947. Throughout the years they made a shift from athletic sportswear to casual footwear. They evolved into the shoe of choice for many subcultures. Today, thanks to the whole variety of colors, styles, prints and fabrics, they speak for us. They tell stories. The newest one is a story of a hundred and four years old Brazilian architect – Oscar Niemeyer.
Today, Converse Inc. is launching a new collection inspired by Niemeyer’s artwork, and his motto “It is not the right angle that attracts me…“. This limited edition covers five different silhouettes, each interpreted through this man’s outspoken architectural vision. This new footwear collection celebrates the Brazilian architect’s non-linear design which is present in all of his works. Niemeyer has established himself as one of Modernism’s greatest pioneers, and introduced a new way to build “curved” architecture, which has become his signature.
“Converse footwear includes some of the most iconic, original and modern designs in history,” says Penny Ericson, Vice President, Converse Jack Purcell and Premium. “As one of the great artistic visionaries of our time, Oscar Niemeyer’s work represents those same qualities and we’re excited to help bring that to life with this new collection.”
Each of these five models is giving us an insight in the core of his philosophy with the distinctive Converse style. The main mark is a red line which points the curves combined with an architect’s famous handwritten poem about curves printed on canvas. The Converse x Oscar Niemeyer collection will launch at exclusive retailers across Brazil on October 23.
