Where Will Google+ Be in 2050? by Srdjan Toljagic
  • July 9, 2012

Why did the giants social site flunk? Made a wrong move, maybe two? Check out this hypothetical father-son conversation in the year 2050 as they reminisce of what Google once was and how did it compare to other social media sites.

The best explanation can be found in this part of the dialogue: Son: “Why weren’t people interested? Was Google Plus Rubbish?”, Father: “No it wasn’t rubbish. But it was a great product delivered at the wrong time. Why would anyone suddenly abandon the social media profiles they’d spent years building relationships on?”

There is no doubt that FaceBook is by far the bigger and at present the more influential in social media. However that can change just as things changed for MySpace, Digg, AOL, and many many other sites and businesses that failed to keep their customers satisfied and happy. And while Google has struggled to get social media right they have both the staying power and the money to keep trying till they do. And IMO Google+ is right enough to survive and become a viable social media site. So those who count Google down and out are starting the count much too early.

And as to the numbers that show FaceBook’s much touted “user time on line” being so very much more than any other site it must be remembered that FaceBook as done an excellent job of getting people and sites to use FaceBook’s sign on credentials. That results in the time they spend on sites like Zinga, Twitter, and other sticky sites while signed on with FaceBook’s log on to count as time also spent on FaceBook. Google+ for all practical purposes currently gets none of this kind of “free” time.

So while FaceBook may never be dethroned as the leader of social media I see Google+ as being around for a very long time. And in that time they will gain on FaceBook in all areas especially business use. And as we all know it’s business use and advertising that are the areas that both FaceBook and Google+ need to produce profits.

Only time will tell if I’m right or the Google+ Naysayers are but I can assure you FaceBook and
Mark Zuckerberg are losing sleep and looking back over their shoulder at Google+.
