SVEDKA Vodka launched its new TV campaign with first of the two old-school music videos featuring the brand icon SVEDKA_Grl. For the first time SVEDKA_Grl has come to life fully animated, and viewers can see her walk, dance, play a keytar and even fly to the moon. SVEDKA Vodka, one of the fastest growing top 10 spirit brands in the US, appointed two expert animation houses – BUF and Laundry! – to do the campaign. They were joined by the famous music video director Melina Matsoukas, who has worked with a lot of great names in the modern music industry, such as Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rhianna, to mention a few. Music spots are intended for showing on major cable networks such as Bravo, VH1, Comedy Central, FX, Oxygen, E!, and also in some movie theatres.
Diana Pawlik, Vice President of Marketing for SVEDKA Vodka, said: “The spirit of these new TV spots truly captures the essence of SVEDKA_Grl as her fun, cheeky self. The result is colorful, provocative, outrageous, fun and cheeky – all the things the SVEDKA brand has come to embody since 2007.”
The first video, entitled “Freak-A-Zoid”, contains a funky remake of old-school Midnight Star hit “Freak-A-Zoid” from 1982. The second video, “Cool Places”, is covered by a remake of the 1983 classic “Cool Places”, originally performed by The Sparks. SVEDKA_Grl allegedly got her moves for the videos by studying famous models Heidi Klum, Brooklyn Decker and Dita Von Teese.

Even though SVEDKA likes to promote itself as a futuristic brand, or a “#1 vodka in 2033″, it still decided to use the ‘80s theme for the new campaign. Maybe it’s trying to encourage the old-school music comeback, or target the ‘80s lovers, but still wants to keep its futuristic image. Or maybe it’s just trying to stay bold and innovative. What do you think?
