As Facebook announced early in December, Sponsored Stories are now appearing in the news feed. They are labeled as Featured Stories, and work the same way as Sponsored Stories by showing your or your friends social interactions with brands and companies. The ads look similar as regular wall posts.
“We’ll be labelling these stories as Featured instead of Sponsored. We are using the term Featured because we want to make it clear to people that they’re seeing content from a page or person they have chosen to connect with.” a Facebook spokesperson said.
Not all sponsored stories will immediately become featured. According to Facebook, marketers can only pay for stories to be featured in your news feed if you have explicitly liked the page. But there is a catch (as always), because you are always connected to your friends, their featured stories will appear in your news feed as well, “to keep things consistent.”.
Featured stories you may see:
When a Page you like posts something new
When a friend likes something (such as a Facebook Page or individual Page post)
When a friend checks in somewhere, plays a game or uses an app
Facebook hopes to show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day and the story will be clearly labeled. This I believe is going to be the case just in the beginning, to avoid user backlash.
