Fast Eddie’s Barber Shop

October 19, 2011 - Print PDF

I’ve stumbled upon this really beautiful identity for Fast Eddie’s Barber Shop and thought – why not post it? It certainly deserves to be noticed, even though it’s not anything big or utterly original; it’s just – beautiful.

Richard Arthur Stewart, the designer of this identity, wrote on his website:
“Fast Eddie’s is a no nonsense barber shop found in Allston, MA. one of Boston’s many historical neighborhoods. This place is the epitome of traditional Americana, which I wanted the mark and typography to represent; Franklin Gothic and ATF Bodoni scanned from a letterpress book with a mashup illustration combining an iconic eagle and barber’s comb. I wanted to stay away from the “red, white & blue” barber pole theme and stick with something high contrast and modern.”

I just love when designers combine vintage and modern, and I’m happy to see a lot of that kind of design these days.
But hey, that’s just me. I can imagine that with the two styles I see most of these days – the neo-retro and the modern minimalistic one – people divide in two groups; one group ‘hates’ one style, and one hates the other. So in which group do you belong? Do you love the pale, worm vintage feeling of old paper and ‘the old days’ or do you prefer gradients, sleek minimalism, ‘new age’ design and colorfull illustrations?

Also, if you like this design, you will surely also like the designs of Fruita BlanchGelateria Naia and the New Vintage Beauty Lounge.
