The famous social networking site Facebook has announced that it will create its own political action committee (PAC). News of Facebook creating a PAC was confirmed earlier this week by congressional newspaper the Hill, which noted that the company registered two domain names – FBPAC.org and FBPAC.us – that are intended for the committee’s use.
“FB PAC will give our employees a way to make their voice heard in the political process by supporting candidates who share our goals of promoting the value of innovation to our economy while giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected,” a company spokesman said.
Facebook has been more and more politically active in the past years. Increasing its presence in Washington as it has grown. In 2007 it hired its first employee in the District of Columbia, and the office now has more than a dozen, including four federally registered lobbyists. The amount they have spent lobbying Congress has grown as well. Facebook has also significantly increased its lobbying expense in 2011 that will total $550,000.
“The increase represents a continuation of our efforts to explain how our service works as well as the important actions we take to protect people who use our service and promote the value of innovation to our economy,” said Andrew Noyes, a Facebook spokesman.
Facebook is not the first social media company to do so. Companies like Microsoft,Google and Amazon also created PAC’s when they were on their rise. The goal of these moves are to increase their influence in Washington in the midst of the complex debates about patents, monopoly status and concerns about the privacy of users.
This will be the first time that Facebook will be backing up candidates, and lots of people are concerned that Facebook may become a target of scrutiny that has affected other firms like Microsoft and Google. I’m sure they will to their best to try to avoid it.
